In this week-long exploration of Northern Romania, pupils are put to the test in a number of challenges, and discover the natural and man-made wonders of Transylvania. The trip combines a three day trek across the arc of the Carpathian Mountains, with a day’s river rafting, a visit to Dracula's Bran Castle and a tour of historic Bucharest.

The trip begins in the medieval city of Brasov, full of medieval architecture and gothic buildings, before starting a three day trek across the Carpathian Mountains. This point to point trek takes the group to the summit of Moldoveanu Peak, the highest mountain in Romania at 2,544 metres. On the last day of the trek, the group will visit the spectacular Bran Castle, believed to be true home of Count Dracula!

The challenge for pupils then continues with a day of river rafting, before returning to Bucharest and exploring the historic sites of the city, including Revolution Square.

Typical itinerary

  1. Day 1: Fly to Bucharest, transfer to Brasov

Upon arrival in Bucharest you will transfer towards the Transylvanian Mountains. Transylvania is a region in central Romania known for its medieval towns, mountainous borders and castles, including Gothic Bran Castle, where locals keep the legend of Dracula alive. The city of Brașov features Saxon walls and bastions, and expansive Council Square, ringed by colourful baroque buildings, the towering Gothic Black Church and lively cafes. Many of southern Transylvania’s Saxon villages are dotted with fortified churches that date back half a millennium.

  2. Day 2: Trek Day 1

Today you will start your trek along the great Transylvanian Traverse route, which takes you across the great Carpathian Mountains, which rise to over 2,500 metres in Transylvania and offer some of the best mountain walking in Europe. This area has some of the few remaining stretches of wilderness left on the continent. As well as the picturesque mountains, you will also visit forests and medieval Romanian villages, where bears and wolves still roam. Tonight you will arrive at your mountain hut where you will spend the night.

  3. Day 3: Trek Day 2

The big hiking day will take you to Moldoveanu Peak at 2,544 metres, the summit of the Fagaras mountain range and the highest peak in Romania. After a long descent through the Sambata Valley, you will finish the day at 1,400 metres at the Sambata mountain hut.

  4. Day 4: Trek Day 3

Today is an easy two hour descent to Sambata Monastery where you will transfer to the support vehicle for an afternoon visiting Dracula's Bran Castle, before returning to the hut for a final evening of wild camping.

  5. Day 5: Rafting

After an early start, enjoy a day exploring some of the Carpathian region's stunning rivers on a rafting trip.  Afterwards, you will transfer to the capital Bucharest, with some time to explore the city or relax after the day's activity.

  6. Day 6: Bucharest city tour

Today you will take a city tour of Bucharest to enjoy some of the cultural sights of this historic city. Some suggested sights to see are Revolution Square, Victoriei Ave, Old Princely Court and Church, Palace of Justice, Unirii Square, Palace of Parliament, Metropolitan Church, Bucharest University, Arch of Triumph and the the Village Museum. And, of course, there will always be a bit of time for shopping! Finish your day with a farewell meal with your team.

  7. Day 7: Fly back to the UK

Today you will be collected from the hotel and returned to the airport for your flight back to the UK.
