Hossa is a location perfect for an outdoor adventure to experience Finland at its best, offering walking trails through pine forests and around lakes, plus ancient rock paintings.
Finland is an excellent destination for a winter adventure where groups can learn traditional skills and try activities like snowshoeing and cross country skiing and snowshoeing. This trip also offers a discovery of the country's geography, nature and traditional way of life.
Students can delve into the Finnish lifestyle by mastering essential skills such as fire making, igloo building and ice fishing - all pivotal survival skills in the wilderness during winter. The itinerary then continues to a reindeer farm for a sleigh ride, followed by a chance to try cross country skiing before returning to their overnight cabin.
Next is a snowshoeing trip, travelling across a ridge between frozen lakes and through mesmerising forests. The group will trek through one of the most remote and untouched regions of Finland, with igloo building being the final challenge before returning home. The last night of the trip is spent in the igloos with the chance of sighting the stunning northern lights.
Fly from the UK to Kuusamo airport in Finland, where you will be met by our in-country supplier, who will transfer you to your cabin accommodation at Jatkonsalmi in Hossa National Park.
Today the group will spend time learning some winter wilderness survival skills, including practising fire making and orienteering skills, and learning how to survive in the snowy conditions. This afternoon you will learn winter fishing skills, piercing a hole in the thick, frozen ice to allow you to access the water below. In the evening there will the first chance to relax in a genuine Finnish lakeside sauna.
After breakfast take a short drive to a local reindeer farm to learn about the semi-wild animals which inhabiting this northern area of Finland. You can try your skills at lassoing, before being taken on a short reindeer sleigh ride.
In the afternoon it is time to learn cross-country skiing, one of Finland's most popular winter sports. After an introduction to the technique, you can test your skills on the track near the cabin.
Days 4-6 :
This morning, the group will set off on a snowshoeing trip. The trail goes along the top of a ridge between two frozen lakes through beautiful snow covered pine, spruce and birch forests. After around six to ten kilometres on snowshoes, reach the northern shore of Lake Iso-Valkeinen and your overnight cabin.
The following day, after breakfast, continue snowshoeing, heading southwards and enjoying the beautiful white snow scenery and the extreme tranquillity. A picnic lunch will be taken at one of the wilderness huts operated by the Finnish Forest and Park Service, and overnight accommodation in Tolosenvirta cabin.
The final day of snowshoeing will take you all the way back to the Jatkonsalmi cabin. En route there is an opportunity to visit an old watermill and the Lounatkoski Rapids. In the evening, enjoy a warm Finnish sauna and a well-deserved delicious dinner.
Having been out in the snow for a few days, these new skills can now be put into action today, the last day of the trip. You’ll learn how to build igloos and then, in teams, work together to build an igloo fit to spend the night in. Spend the evening warming yourseleves by an open campfire (which you’ll need to build and light yourselves) and hope for the northen lights to light up the sky in celabration of your final night out in the Artic conditions!
This morning, after breakfast, the group will be transferred to Kuusamo airport to catch the return flight to the UK. If there is time, en route you can visit the Large Carnivore Centre of Kuusamo to see European brown bear, lynx and wolverine (optional).
