Historically important to the rural communities as a haven for fish and natural resources, Kylmäluoma is now regarded as one of the most picturesque hiking regions in Finland.

With around 90 crystal clear lakes to enjoy as you trek through the forested wilderness, there is plenty of adventure to be found in Kylmäluoma. Students that travel here can engage in the Finnish experience by taking part in a variety of outdoor activities such as snowshoeing, hiking, trekking, canoeing and cross-country skiing.

During the 1600s members of the Sami communities and coastal hunters made their way through the area looking for more beneficial hunting grounds and places to sustain a population. The name Kylmäluoma was given by the original Sami settlers, and it can be split into two parts: luoma refers to a good fishing spot, and Kylmä means cold – so it is known as 'the cold fishing area'. Many of the lakes in Finland have the word luoma in their original name as they were the more bountiful fishing locations for the settlers.

There is also plenty of wildlife in the region to encounter, particularly birds. As much of the region is made up of lakes, mires or old-growth forests, it is a haven for water-dwelling bird species and for some mammals such as mice, wolverines, elk and potentially bears and wolves. Kylmäluoma is an important grazing area for reindeer and it is likely that you will encounter some herds during your trek.
