Scuba diving is one of the greatest adventures students can embark upon, with Malta being one of the finest starting points. Sunshine, warmth and visibility make Malta a prime diving location.

An incredible short-haul destination, Malta is home to some of the finest wreck diving in the world, as well as perfect waters to begin a diving adventure. In addition to being a great location for first time divers, Malta is also an excellent island for pupils to further their skills and enhance their diving abilities with advanced courses.

Above the waves, there is plenty to see and experience. Malta has a long and varied history, from ancient temples, the Knights of St. John, different empires, and finally into the 21st Century. Key places are included in this one-week itinerary, such as the historic capital of Mdina and the current capital, Valletta. Both of these locations are bursting with history, culture and Mediterranean charm.

Typical itinerary

  1. Day 1: Fly to Malta

Depart the UK and arrive in Malta later the same day.

Upon arrival in Malta, you will be met and transferred to your accommodation. Once settled in, get acquainted with the dive centre and have a group meal out in the town before your open water dives.

  2. Days 2-3 : Open Water Referral Course

Having completed the theory and practical portions of the course in the UK, you will venture into the open ocean with diving instructors to finish your PADI Open Water course. Over two days you will have four dives to learn the skills and techniques needed to become certified divers.

In the afternoons, once you have returned to the dive centres, you will have the remainder of the day at leisure to explore the island, relax by the ocean, and discuss your dives earlier in the day.

  3. Days 4-6 : Advanced Open Water Course

After completing your PADI Open Water courses, you will go straight in to your PADI Advanced Open Water course. Allowing you to dive more sites, gain a greater understanding of diving, and become safer divers, the advanced course is pivotal to any marine adventure.

The course consists of five dives (possibly allowing time for an additional ‘fun dive’ at the end) and includes a deep dive, a navigation dive, and a selection of other disciplines. Malta is widely regarded as one of the greatest wreck diving locations, so wreck diving is highly recommended during this course.

  4. Day 7: Rest day

Today is a day of rest from your diving activities, giving you a chance to explore the land and see some of the many historical and cultural sites of Malta. You can head into Valletta and absorb some of the stunning architecture and immerse yourself in the more recent history of the nation. Alternatively, you could perhaps head to the centre of the island, visiting Neolithic temples and the historic town of Mdina which was once the capital. For those wanting to spend more time with the marine side of the trip, a behind-the-scenes visit to the national aquarium can be arranged.

  5. Day 8: Return to the UK

You will be transferred back to the airport in time for your return flight to the UK, arriving later the same day.

Types of diving certification and amount of ‘fun dives’ can be tailored to suit different school groups and individuals depending on ability.
