Arguably one of the most famous historical episodes from Japan, the story of the ninja - or shinobi - can be found in Togakushi where a school was set-up in the 12th century amongst the mountains and lakes.

Nestled away in the mountains of the Alps, Togakushi is one of the most beautiful parts of this region and, as students wind their way through the trails of the forest and lakes, they should find themselves falling back in time to a very different type of Japan. Rich in history and scenery, it is not just the nature and past that draws people here.  The area has always held deep spiritual connections to Japanese society and the history of the shrine dates back over 1,500 years – and perhaps even longer.

The most famous landmark is the Togakushi Shrine, consisting of five shrines over two kilometres. Togakushi Village is considered by many to be the birthplace of Togakure Ryu Ninpo; a school of ninjutsu founded over 800 years ago. One of the most romanticised parts of Japanese history, the true story of the ninja is quite different to what pupils may have heard. Seen as the polar opposite of the samurai, the secrecy of the ninja leaves many questions unanswered. Groups can even take part in some activities at the school and learn the ways of ninjutsu.
