Nestled in an almost medieval time-warp of temples and back-streets, the old part of Bhaktapur is largely kept vehicle free, making it a delight to explore on foot.

One of the ancient capitals of the Kathmandu Valley, it has three major squares filled with temples and ancient religious architecture, giving it the fitting name of ‘City of Devotees’.

Bhaktapur has a distinctly different culture to the rest of Nepal, as the majority of the inhabitants are the Newar people, historic inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley. The city is famed for its historic religious buildings and medieval squares, many of which survived the 2015 earthquake, and some that bear the scars. Nevertheless, the culture and life in Bhaktapur remain on display and you can encounter everything from carpenters in the streets, to open kilns, and artisans weaving cloths.
