One of Costa Rica’s most notable natural features, this impressive volcano resides within the Arenal Volcano National Park. Rising above the rainforest that surrounds its base, it is a stunning sight and the immediate area hosts a wealth of activities including rafting, hiking and canopy tours.
The national park is home to a wealth of biological and geographical complexities due to the fertile soils, active volcanoes, mountain ranges and lakes.
Wildlife includes howler monkeys, snakes, parrots, and tapir, whilst the plant species include everything from palm trees to orchids. The region has some endemic species and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country.
Lake Arenal at the base of the volcano offers watersports such as kayaking and windsurfing, in addition to providing 12% of the country’s power through a hydroelectric dam.
