This large area of protected cloud forest reserve covers 10,500 hectares and is a birding paradise with the number of recorded species topping over 400, including the iconic resplendent quetzal.

Located south of the Arenal Volcano, the magnificent Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve boasts some of the greatest scenery in Costa Rica and is famed for its incredible range of biodiversity. With over 400 bird species and the greatest number or orchid species in a single location, it is clear to see why it is a firm favourite for those visiting Costa Rica. The most sought after bird sighting is the resplendent quetzal (the national bird of Costa Rica), which nests here during March and April - although you can get lucky and spot them year round.

There are six distinct ecological zones in the reserve and over 90% of these zones are virgin rainforest which makes this a unique location for Central America. A hive of scientific activity and conservation projects, there is plenty for students to experience and learn about here.
