Located on Sri Lanka’s western coast, Wilpattu National Park consists of dense jungle and natural lakes with a rich variety of flora and fauna, where can you observe a host of mammals and reptiles, as well as many native and migratory birds.
The best way to travel through the park is by 4 wheel drive jeep safari, allowing groups to safely explore the different habitats, observe wildlife and learn about conservation. Amongst the diverse flora and fauna, groups will learn and test their knowledge by identifying different wildlife species, with the assistance of naturalist guides from the park.
There are approximately 30 species of mammal found in the park, including leopard, elephant and sloth bear. Bird species are numerous and feature owls, kites and eagles, alongside the endemic Sri Lankan jungle fowl. With the range of scenery and wildlife, the park offers a great opportunity for budding young photographers to practise and improve skills.
A visit to Wilpattu is a great way to end a school adventure in Sri Lanka: its beautiful scenery and close proximity to the beaches of the Indian Ocean offer a great finale to any itinerary.
