The centre of life in Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar is an historic city that has been a trading hub for centuries. The first settlers in the area hunted mammoths, contrasting sharply with the modern city we see today.

Mongolia's capital and biggest city offers school groups a fascinating culture and history as soon as they arrive in the country. The settlements that became Ulaanbaatar have been mentioned throughout history, including in the travels of Marco Polo and during the rule of Genghis Khan. Originally set up as a mobile yurt monastery to be able to travel up and down the river systems depending on resources, what is now Ulaanbaatar settled in its current and final location in 1778.

In the 20th Century, Mongolia went through several political changes, including rule by China, rule by Russia, Soviet state, and finally a democratic nation in the 1990s.
