Sigiriya rock fortress towers over the landscape of Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle, and a climb to the summit provides the opportunity to discover Sri Lanka’s ancient history, and enjoy spectacular views.
According to ancient text, Sigiriya - or ‘Lion Rock’ - was selected by King Kasyapa for his new capital. He built the fortress on top of the rock, and decorated it with colourful frescos and gateways, as a symbol of his power. Today groups can reach the summit in less than two hours, with dramatic views on the climb up.
The remains of the fortress are still visible, and it is easy to imagine the fortress in its once opulent grandeur. Halfway up the rock, you can see the impressive gateway to the fortress, in the form of a mighty lion, which gives the rock its alternative name ‘Lion Rock’. On returning from the summit, you will discover the beautiful water terraces and bolder gardens, which adorn the complex. Look out for troops of toque macaques, inhabitants of the rock and very inquisitive!
