Located in the north of the country, Minneriya is well known for its long-standing conservation of Sri Lankan elephants which roam here in large herds, under the protection of the national park status.

The best way to safely study wildlife in the park is by 4 wheel drive safari vehicle, observing elephants and other mammals which congregate around the Minneriya tank, a vast man made lake which provides water for the park’s animals and birdlife.

As well as the herds of elephants in the park, groups can expect to see two types of monkey: the purple faced langur and toque macaque.  There are rarer animals for groups to spot in the park, such as the Sri Lankan leopard and Sri Lankan sloth bear, however both are elusive and more difficult to see.  Conditions in the park provide a well suited habitat for up to 160 bird species, including water birds such as pelicans, storks and herons.
