This mountain range in central Sri Lanka offers great trekking through a vast diversity of different terrains, ecosystems, habitats and forest types, from cloud forests to dry plains.
Despite constituting less than 1% of Sri Lanka’s land, the region has a higher proportion of biodiversity than almost anywhere else in the country. Over 30% of all the country's endemic species (particularly flora) are found only within the Knuckles Mountain Range. These spectacular conditions make this region a firm favourite for groups seeking to encounter wildlife and experience a variety of trekking environments.
Knuckles takes its name from a series of recumbent folds and peaks in the west of the massif which resembles the knuckles of a clenched fist. The climate here can vary drastically, from hot, to very wet and cold, with some parts even experiencing ground frost in the cooler months which has helped cultivate a range of ecosystems including pygmy forests and riverine forests.
A combination of the best of Sri Lanka’s cultural and natural experiences, with a rural community project, creates the perfect base for pupils to learn and develop.
A fantastic introduction to the geography, wildlife and culture of Sri Lanka, where groups can experience incredible landscapes and learn about the history and traditions of this ‘Island Paradise’.
