This protected area in the central highlands is covered by montane grassland and cloud forest and is rich in biodiversity, with many endemic species.

Horton Plains is the only national park in Sri Lanka that allows exploration on foot, and therefore offers an outdoors experience that is unique to the country. There are superb trekking trails taking in sights such as Baker’s Falls and the sheer cliffs of World's End.

Here, students can encounter species not only endemic to Sri Lanka, but endemic to the Horton Plains region – particularly birds. There are plenty of opportunities for education and conservation as the park management documents the myriad of flora and fauna, as well as conducting research on environmental issues such as forest dieback and climate monitoring.
